Before and After Makeover for Mark Zuckerberg: Featured in Esquire's Worst Dressed Hall of Shame

In March 2009, I posted an article about Mark Zuckerberg's style fail during his feature on the Today Show (sorry, the tie doesn't make the fleece-North Face jacket a sport coat).

Last week, Zuckerberg was featured in Esquire's 2010's Worst Dressed Hall of Shame.  My favorite write ups with pictorial slide-shows were on Mashable and the Huffington Post. 

Rather than shame the guy further, I thought I would offer our Facebook Hero/Villain a realistic style makeover.  In an attempt to respect his comfort driven, casual style, we at Hendricks Park put together what we might send him in his first box if he asked us to upgrade his style a notch (baby steps!).

1. Long sleeve zip-polo from Agave; 1a. Green, graphic T-shirt from Tailgate to get him out of his solid grey and olive T-shirt rut; 2. Since he is very attached to wearing a North Face jacket (instead of business jackets), a stylish performance jacket from NAU is a perfect way to polish his look; 3.  Bye-bye baggy jeans! Hello comfy-hip denim from Citizens of Humanity (Jagger); 4. Vintage (original!) Army belt from WILL belts; 4a. Recycled fire-hose belt from FeurWear; 5. Burnished chocolate suede chukkas by AURI; 5a. Navy and black canvas & leather sneakers by AURI (AURI shoes have NASA designed temperature regulating technology for maximum comfort).

1. Charcoal, windowpane button up shirt and black tie;  2. Fashion meets performance wear in a black, Riding Jacket by NAU; 3. Dark denim that's hard to beat by Agave (Gringo in Leukadia Flex Dark), 4. If Mark insists on wearing sneakers, let's trade out those white, running shoes for a pair of sleek, street sneakers in black leather and suede by AURI.

In summary, technology and style can coexist.  I'm married to a tech guy who dressed similar to Mark Zuckerberg for years.  Now, my former baggy jeans, Threadless.com, Northface, REI, junkie bugs me regularly to find out what I have coming in for Hendricks Park each month.  He is not only on the quest for cool, new tech gear and gadgets, he also wants the coolest, new wardrobe gear.

What Not to Wear in 2011

 

Meggings-(men's leggings or jeggings-jean leggings) were added to the Macmillan Dictionary in January of 2010 and appeared on the fashion runways for 2011.  However, I think Conan O'Brien makes it crystal clear why these are a big faux pas.

Mandals-(man sandals). Please ignore the runway suggestions that skinny, strappy mandals are "in."  News flash...they are "in" but only for women and gay-fashionistos.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Fur Real-if you must don fur, go for faux because real fur is a real faux pas.  Wearing fur as a fashion statement is ostentatious and inhumane.  Click here to learn about the horrible truths behind fur in fashion.

 

 

 

 

 

Buttoned Up-Three button jackets and double breasted suits are making a strong comeback in 2011.  However, only button the middle button of your three button jackets.

If you want to wear a double breasted suit select one that is slim fitting and tapers in at the waist.  Avoid the 80's boxy versions that were used to hide a big paunch.  NOTE: they don't hide it, they flaunt it Santa Claus style.

However, its ok to button a double breasted jacket up, just not a 3-button jacket.  To feel really in the know, say "3B" for three button and "DB" for double breasted jacket.

Well-Dressed Men Survey 2011

The Men's Wearhouse just released a Well-Dressed Men Survey for 2011, conducted by Kelton Research. 

According to the survey, American men are losing touch with style as 73% of the population believe men don't dress as well as they did 20 years ago.  This is probably why the 60's Mad Men styles and post war 40's-50's style icons still influence fashion trends for men today.

A fascinating result of the survey reported that 87% of women in relationships would be willing to sacrifice something (going out to dinner, cell phone, vacation days, etc.) to have a better-dressed partner.

The survey reports 85% of women "think a guy who dresses well is sexier than one who has a lot of money," 78% of women "believe dressing well is one of the hottest things a guy can do" and 64% believe that "women are more likely to marry a well-dressed man than one who isn't as as well put together."

The results of this survey correlates with feedback from Hendricks Park clients who consistently tell us they experience an increase in compliments, confidence, and dating success after buying clothing through Hendricks Park.

Mark Twain said "clothes make the man."  I think this survey supports this statement and for those of you out there who despise shopping (56%), are tired of feeling under-dressed (72%), know your wardrobe needs a makeover (77%) or would dress better if you simply knew how (42%), hi-tech help is available!

What You See May Be Different Than What We See

I stumbled upon this funky, self-adhesive mirror from the UK called "Thinking Bubble" by Oscar Diaz Melon.  I think it's symbolic of the "resolutionary" movement the New Year inspires. 

Most of us only see ourselves a few minutes of the day while co-workers, family, etc. see our appearance all day long (for better or worse).  Considering your appearance is other people's daily environment, the gentlemanly thing to do is ensure your appearance is comfortable to the eyes, respectful, or at least interesting. 

This month, I encourage you to ask your significant other, or someone in your life whose opinion matters to you, the following questions. 

1. What is your least favorite thing I wear?...Why?

2. What is your most favorite thing I wear?...Why?

Even if you are Mr. Style himself, I bet you will be surprised and inspired by the answers.  You can return the favor and offer to answer the same questions for him or her...but if it's your wife or significant other, offer with caution (or at least a bouquet of flowers)!
